Government Declares Public Holiday
Cabinet Secretary for Interior Kipchumba Murkomen has declared Monday, March 31, 2025, a public holiday to commemorate Idd-ul-Fitr.
In a Gazette Notice dated Friday, March 28, the CS announced that the holiday would be observed nationwide as part of the Islamic festivities marking the end of Ramadan.
“IT IS notified for the general information of the public that, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares that Monday, the 31st March, 2025, shall be a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr,” the notice stated.
Significance of Idd-ul-Fitr
Idd-ul-Fitr is one of the two official holidays in Islam, celebrated by Muslims worldwide. It marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, during which Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. The holiday falls on the first three days of Shawwāl, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar.
How Idd-ul-Fitr is Celebrated
Idd-ul-Fitr is a time of joy and gratitude, marked by special prayers, feasts, and charitable giving. Families and friends come together to celebrate, exchange gifts, and wear new clothes. Many Muslims also visit the graves of their relatives to honor their memories.
The declaration of a public holiday ensures that Muslims across Kenya can fully participate in the festivities, reinforcing the country’s recognition of religious diversity.
Nationwide Observance
With the announcement, businesses and government offices are expected to close for the day, allowing the Muslim community to observe the celebrations without disruptions. This move aligns with Kenya’s commitment to respecting and acknowledging religious holidays of various faiths.
As the holiday approaches, Muslims across the country are preparing for a festive and spiritual celebration, marking the culmination of a month of devotion and self-discipline.
