CS Justin Muturi: I Will Not Resign Over Government Disputes
Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has firmly dismissed calls for his resignation amid ongoing tensions within the government. Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV’s JKLive on Wednesday, Muturi refuted speculation that he is on the verge of stepping down following an alleged fallout with President William Ruto.
Muturi Defends His Position
The former Attorney General insisted that there is no valid reason for him to resign, stating that his recent remarks regarding abductions and extrajudicial killings were in line with his responsibilities as a public servant. He emphasized that his stance was not an act of defiance but rather a call for the government to uphold its promises and the rule of law.
“The issue I raised on January 12 was an objection to abductions and extrajudicial killings happening in the country. I believe it is time for the government to debate these issues because, if left unchecked, they have the potential to drag this country into chaos and anarchy,” Muturi stated.
He further noted that his criticism of these incidents aligns with the principles of the Kenya Kwanza administration, which during its campaign, pledged to end enforced disappearances. According to him, he is merely holding the government accountable for its commitments.
Calls for Recognition, Not Resignation
Muturi dismissed allegations of insubordination and instead argued that his firm stance should be applauded, not condemned.
“As far as I know, it is not government policy to abduct or kill people. Speaking against such actions cannot be a reason for resignation. In fact, I should be congratulated for restating the government’s position, which is also informed by our Constitution, which we swore to protect and uphold,” he said.
He also pointed out that following his concerns, the government has started addressing the issue of abductions, proving that his stance was necessary.
Upholding the Rule of Law
Muturi stressed that his only objective was to ensure the rule of law is followed, particularly in the arrest and prosecution of individuals.
“If indeed people were arrested, they should be presented before a court within 24 hours. According to the Constitution, they should also be informed of the reason for their arrest within the same timeframe,” he asserted.
Muturi Distances Himself from Democratic Party’s Decision
When asked about his former political party, the Democratic Party (DP), ending its ties with the Kenya Kwanza coalition, Muturi remained neutral. He stated that the decision was made by the party’s leadership, and since he is no longer an active member, he had no involvement in the matter.
His remarks come at a time when political tensions continue to rise, with increased scrutiny on government actions and growing demands for accountability. Whether his firm stance will affect his position in President Ruto’s Cabinet remains to be seen.
