Cleophas Malala Drops Bombshell: Accuses UDA of Dodging Millions in Taxes
Former UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala has shaken Kenya’s political scene after publicly accusing the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) of orchestrating a massive tax evasion scheme dating back to August 2022.
In a fiery interview aired on KTN TV, Malala claimed that UDA has failed to remit statutory deductions from employees’ salaries, smuggled election equipment into the country without paying duty, and even paid ghost workers—some of whom now occupy plum positions in government.
“Despite my professional advice, the party leadership flatly refused to remit PAYE, NSSF, the Social Health Authority contributions, and even the Housing Levy,” Malala said, sounding the alarm on a scandal he estimates has defrauded taxpayers between KSh 120 million and KSh 140 million.
The former Kakamega senator’s revelations come at a time when many Kenyans are already grappling with a high cost of living and heightened taxes under President William Ruto’s administration.
“It’s a shame that the ruling party, which has burdened Kenyans with new levies, can’t even fulfill its basic statutory obligations,” Malala added.
According to the ex-senator, UDA’s rot runs even deeper. He alleged that during his tenure, he uncovered a bloated payroll featuring nearly 197 individuals — despite the party only having about 40 active employees. Many of these “ghost workers” were allegedly individuals already serving in government, drawing double salaries at the taxpayers’ expense.
And that’s not all. Malala accused UDA of illegally importing electronic gadgets used in its grassroots elections without paying required import duties.
“If everything was above board, let them produce the KRA receipts and customs clearance documents,” he dared.
Malala, who says he has documentary evidence to back his claims, vowed to escalate the matter to the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal in a formal complaint.
As of this morning, UDA has not issued an official response to the damning allegations.
