China Backs UN Conference on Palestine as Momentum Builds for Two-State Solution

China has thrown its weight behind a high-level United Nations conference on Palestine, reaffirming its long-standing support for a two-state solution amid the intensifying conflict in Gaza.

Speaking at a press briefing in Beijing on Friday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun labelled the Palestinian issue as the “core of Middle East issues,” insisting that the two-state solution remains the only viable path toward resolving the crisis.

“The two-state solution is the only practical way out of the Palestinian question,” Guo said. “China will continue to work with the international community to promote a ceasefire in Gaza, alleviate the humanitarian crisis, and implement a just and lasting resolution.”

China’s statement comes on the heels of a major diplomatic move by France. President Emmanuel Macron announced that France will formally recognise the State of Palestine at the UN General Assembly in September, becoming the first G7 country to do so. The declaration has stirred backlash from Israel and the United States, with critics accusing Paris of rewarding extremism.

Still, Macron’s position aligns France with 147 other UN member states that already recognise Palestinian statehood, amplifying the global call for a peaceful resolution and urgent humanitarian intervention.

Guo confirmed that China would actively support the upcoming UN meeting aimed at reviving the two-state framework, citing the need for international consensus and urgent ceasefire arrangements to address Gaza’s humanitarian catastrophe.

The Gaza conflict, which reignited on October 7, 2023, has devastated the besieged territory. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, nearly 60,000 Palestinians—mostly women and children—have been killed. Basic infrastructure has been reduced to rubble, healthcare systems have collapsed, and widespread hunger has taken hold.

“China closely follows the current situation in Gaza,” Guo said. “We hope all relevant parties can reach a ceasefire arrangement as soon as possible and de-escalate the situation to ease the humanitarian crisis.”

Beijing has long positioned itself as a proponent of Palestinian statehood. But as diplomatic pressure mounts and the West grows increasingly divided on the issue, China has taken a more visible role in advocating for peace.

With the UN conference drawing closer, momentum appears to be shifting toward renewed global recognition of Palestine’s statehood and a revived push for lasting peace in the region.
