Charity Ngilu Declares Bid for Kitui Governor in 2027
Former Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has officially announced her bid to reclaim the county’s top seat in the 2027 elections. Ngilu, who previously served as governor from 2018 to 2022, said she had answered calls from residents urging her to make a political comeback.
Speaking at a funeral in Ivovoa village, Kyangwithya, Kitui Central, Ngilu affirmed her commitment to serving Kitui once again. “If it is a matter of my coming back to continue where I left off, I am ready to take the challenge. I am able to continue serving Kitui people. It is important for the people of Kitui to be served well,” she stated.
Ngilu’s political journey took an unexpected turn in the 2022 elections when she stepped down from the race in favor of Julius Malombe, who eventually won the seat. However, with Malombe’s term set to end in 2027, Ngilu has thrown her hat back into the ring, ready to reclaim her position.
Public Endorsement
During the funeral gathering, Ngilu sought the blessings and support of the people, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. The mourners expressed their approval as she declared her intentions. “Henceforth, I am moving forward for the sake of you and the sake of many,” she said.
She assured Kitui residents that her leadership would remain people-centered and that she would maintain an open-door policy to ensure effective service delivery. “I would serve you with love and devotion and pay attention to everything the people want done,” she added.
Pledging Accessible Leadership
Ngilu criticized leaders who isolate themselves from the public after assuming office, urging those in power to remain accessible to the electorate. She emphasized that elected leaders should not treat their offices as personal properties but as places of service to the people.
“People must be served with dignity irrespective of their social standing. Whether they have shoes, are barefoot, or are pregnant, they must be respected and served indiscriminately,” she said.
She also took a swipe at government officials who make it difficult for ordinary citizens to reach them. “Some are moving around in a fleet of cars and walking on red carpets, forgetting that they campaigned as ordinary people, not special beings,” Ngilu remarked.
Ngilu’s declaration sets the stage for a heated gubernatorial race in Kitui as the 2027 election approaches. With her experience and strong grassroots support, she is expected to be a formidable candidate against potential contenders.
