Chaos in Kitale: CS Oparanya’s Partner Mary Biketi Attacked at Charity Event
A peaceful charity event turned chaotic on Friday afternoon when goons attacked Mary Biketi, the partner of Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, during an outreach program in Kitale.
Biketi, who was at the Kitale Museum with her team under the Mary Biketi Foundation, condemned the violence, terming it an unfortunate and unprovoked attack on a non-political initiative aimed at helping locals.
“I want to take this strongest opportunity to condemn the violence meted out on our team while undertaking the well-meaning initiative by my Mary Biketi Foundation,” Biketi told reporters after recording a statement with police.
Phones Stolen, Cars Broken Into
Eyewitnesses said the attackers, believed to have come from a nearby informal settlement, stormed the venue while the event was underway, robbing participants of phones and valuables, and vandalizing several vehicles.
“We were proceeding with our programme when goons came and attacked us, stole phones and broke into cars,” Biketi said.
Several people were injured during the assault, though the exact number remains unconfirmed.
No Political Agenda, Just Charity
Biketi emphasized that the foundation is purely philanthropic and not tied to any political affiliations or ambitions.
“We are not in any political party. We are just empowering the youth, women and vulnerable groups in society,” she stated.
Youths Speak Out
Local youth voiced their outrage at the incident, accusing unnamed individuals of weaponizing young people for political ends.
“Around 50 goons attacked us for no reason, but we have information on who was behind the violence,” said Morgan Chesoni, a resident of Kiminini constituency.
“Mary has not said she is contesting for any seat. It is not yet time for politics. Those using the youth badly need to stop.”
Call for Justice
Officials from the Mary Biketi Foundation called on authorities to investigate and bring those responsible to book. They insisted the event’s only goal was to uplift the community through empowerment and support.
“Our event was purely about uplifting young people. What happened today is unacceptable and should never occur again in Trans Nzoia,” Biketi added.
As investigations continue, residents are calling for increased security and accountability to ensure such violence does not disrupt future social programs.
