Chaos in Kakamega: Mourners Attack Pastor Over Cultural Insults at Funeral
Drama unfolded at a funeral in Luandeti, Kakamega County, after mourners turned on a pastor who allegedly insulted cultural traditions and cursed the grieving family.
The incident began when the clergyman reportedly barred Joseph Wafula, the father of the deceased, from delivering his final tribute, insisting that a widowed woman should speak first — a move mourners said was a deep violation of local customs. In many Kenyan communities, cultural norms dictate that parents must be the first to speak during burials, especially before in-laws.
Tensions quickly escalated when the pastor was seen standing atop the freshly dug grave, reportedly hurling curses at the family. Furious mourners confronted the pastor, accusing him of not only disrespecting traditions but also exhibiting “dictatorial” behavior. Some even alleged that this was not the first time he had caused chaos at funerals.
“This pastor has done this before. We could not allow his dictatorship anymore,” a mourner told local reporters.
Following the dramatic ejection of the pastor, the bereaved family opted to proceed with the burial rites without any involvement from the church.
