CCTV Footage Reveals Chilling Final Moments of Slain Kasipul MP Charles Were
Tragic new details have emerged in the shocking murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles On’gondo Were, who was gunned down on the evening of May 1 in what authorities are calling a well-coordinated assassination.
According to investigators, CCTV footage obtained from businesses along Wabera Street and Valley Road has helped piece together the MP’s final moments before the fatal shooting, which occurred at around 7:40 p.m.
The footage shows a man in a hooded jacket trailing the MP’s vehicle from Wabera Street to Valley Road, where traffic had brought the car to a stop. Moments later, the suspect disembarked from a waiting sport bike, approached the passenger side of the MP’s vehicle, and fired four shots at close range before fleeing on the motorcycle.
Three bullet holes were later found on the vehicle’s passenger side, with blood splatters on the dashboard—a scene investigators described as the aftermath of a calculated execution. The late MP was hit in the chest and arm and rushed to Nairobi Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
His driver and bodyguard, who were with him at the time, escaped uninjured. The bodyguard, who was seated directly behind the MP, told detectives that the attack happened so fast he had no time to react. He took cover, then attempted to pursue the assailants on foot, but they had already sped off into the Nairobi CBD.
Earlier in the day, MP Were had been attending parliamentary duties. He left Parliament shortly before 7:00 p.m., and CCTV later showed his vehicle stopping briefly on Wabera Street. During this stop, the bodyguard entered an M-Pesa outlet and deposited Ksh.20,000 into the MP’s account. It was at this point that the suspect was first seen loitering nearby.
Ballistic experts have since recovered three spent cartridges at the crime scene. These will undergo forensic examination as the investigation intensifies.
Police have since questioned the MP’s driver, bodyguard, and the M-Pesa attendant as part of efforts to identify the assailants and determine whether the killing was politically motivated. Detectives have also extended their probe to Kasipul constituency to assess any emerging local threats or political tensions that could be linked to the incident.
Homicide investigators led by Director Martin Nyuguto have vowed to leave no stone unturned. “We are following promising leads and analyzing all available surveillance footage,” a senior officer said.
The assassination of MP Charles Were has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, with leaders from across the divide calling for swift justice and enhanced protection for public officials.
