CCTV Exposes How Goons Violently Invaded KHRC Offices
Shocking CCTV footage has surfaced showing how a group of armed goons stormed the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) offices in Nairobi on Sunday, July 6, just a day before the planned Saba Saba demonstrations.
The harrowing video, shared on KHRC’s official X page, captured more than 10 boda boda riders arriving at the premises at exactly 2:08 PM. Each motorcycle carried two to three masked individuals, clearly intending to conceal their identities.
Upon arrival, the masked men charged toward the main gate. Despite resistance from two security guards attempting to lock the pedestrian entrance, the goons forced their way in.
The attackers then stormed into the compound and disrupted a press conference convened by Kenyan mothers demanding justice for victims of arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings.
In one scene, the goons confront a female security guard, demanding to know if the premises were being used to plan protests. “Are you planning protests?” one of them asked. “There is no protest,” the guard is heard replying.
As the goons charged toward the conference venue, panic ensued. Attendees are seen scattering, with screams audible in the background. A woman carrying a child dropped her phone while fleeing; a goon quickly picked it up. A man attempting to recover the phone was assaulted.
More goons, some wielding clubs, joined the assault, roughing up the security guards and asserting control of the premises. The footage ends as chaos unfolds at the gate.
KHRC later issued a strong statement condemning the attack, describing it as a coordinated effort by the government to silence civil society voices.
“This was a calculated escalation in the campaign of intimidation by the William Ruto regime against the KHRC following the extraordinary legal rendition of our staff Martin Mavenjina—and human rights defenders holding it accountable for gross human rights violations,” the statement read. “We will not be silenced! The Constitution protects our right to protest and speak out. See you on the streets on Monday!”
Their sentiments were echoed by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and the Police Reforms Working Group (PRWG), who condemned the attack and called for immediate, impartial investigations.
“This attack represents a deliberate attempt to undermine civil liberties and instill fear in those advocating for justice,” LSK stated.
Civil society groups have urged authorities to guarantee the safety of human rights defenders and ensure that such acts of violence are not repeated.
The disturbing incident underscores the growing tension ahead of the Saba Saba protests and raises urgent questions about the state’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting freedoms enshrined in the Constitution.
