Case Against Chebukati, Raila, and Kalonzo to Proceed Despite Ex-IEBC Chair’s Death
A legal battle involving former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati, Azimio leader Raila Odinga, and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka is set to proceed despite Chebukati’s passing in February 2025.
The case, filed by activist Khalef Khalifa, revolves around alleged irregularities in the 2022 electoral process. When the matter came before High Court Judge Lawrence Mugambi, Chebukati’s legal representative informed the court that he had not yet received instructions on how to proceed due to his client’s demise.
“I have not filed responses because the respondent is now deceased, and we are yet to receive instructions on how to proceed,” the lawyer stated.
Court Directs Case to Proceed
Despite this, the court directed that all parties involved file their responses and submissions. Additionally, the petitioner is required to file responses to an application related to the case.
The court scheduled the matter for mention on July 1, when a ruling date will be set.
This case continues to stir political and legal discussions, as it involves high-profile figures whose roles in the 2022 elections remain a subject of scrutiny. Whether the proceedings will significantly impact the political landscape remains to be seen.
