Body of Missing Man Recovered from Collapsed Building in Mombasa

The body of Yussuf Ali Abdi, who went missing following the collapse of an eleven-storey building at Fayaz Kilifi Corner in Mombasa, has been recovered after nearly twelve days of intense search and rescue operations.

Yussuf’s remains were discovered early Sunday morning and transported to the Coast General Hospital mortuary. CCTV footage last showed him entering the ill-fated building on April 2, just days before it was demolished by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

Family Identifies Body

Speaking at the site, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir confirmed that the body was successfully retrieved and positively identified by Yussuf’s family.

“We have retrieved the body from the debris, and the family has confirmed it is that of Yussuf Ali Abdi. The process took longer due to the manner in which the building collapsed. Investigations are still underway to determine the exact cause of the collapse,” said Governor Nassir. “Once the taskforce concludes its probe, the findings will be made public and legal action will follow.”

Community Support and Government Coordination

On behalf of the grieving family, Liban Hirsi expressed gratitude to the authorities and the Mombasa community.

“We deeply appreciate the assistance we received from the county government and security agencies. The support from the people of Mombasa through prayers gave us strength as we waited for answers,” he said.

Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno commended the coordinated efforts of all rescue teams.

“This mission has been executed successfully since the moment we received reports of the building collapse. Every team played its role professionally,” he stated.

Mombasa County Commissioner Mohammed Noor described the effort as one of the most organized rescue operations in Kenyan history.

“This has been an unprecedented operation in Kenya, not only in scale but also in professionalism. The safety of the public was our top priority throughout. Over 60 families were evacuated from the area to facilitate the rescue and recovery efforts,” he noted.

Ongoing Investigations

With the recovery of Yussuf’s body, the focus now shifts to understanding what led to the sudden collapse of the high-rise structure. Authorities are investigating whether the tragedy resulted from structural flaws, negligence, or other underlying issues.

As the family prepares for Yussuf’s Islamic burial, Kenyans are left seeking justice and assurances that such preventable tragedies will not be repeated.
