Blogger Ndiang’ui Kinyagia Summoned to DCI After Reappearance from Alleged Hiding
Controversial blogger Ndiang’ui Kinyagia has been summoned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) following his reappearance after what was reported as a mysterious disappearance that sparked national uproar.
Kinyagia, who appeared before a Nairobi court on Thursday morning, had gone missing on June 22, 2025, from his home in Kinoo, Kiambu County. His sudden disappearance prompted widespread concern, with social media users and some sections of the media accusing law enforcement agencies of abducting him.
In a strongly worded statement issued Thursday, the National Police Service (NPS) denied any involvement in the incident, reiterating that Kinyagia was never in police custody. The Service condemned what it termed as a worrying pattern of individuals “feigning abduction” to attract public sympathy and mislead the nation.
“The Service reiterates its earlier response that Ndiang’ui Kinyagia was not in police custody. We take great exception to the emerging trend whereby individuals feign abduction and provide false information to the police, intending to generate a misleading narrative that exploits public outrage,” the statement read.
Police have now directed Kinyagia to present himself at the DCI headquarters to assist with ongoing investigations. Authorities confirmed that he remains a person of interest in unspecified criminal investigations.
The NPS also warned that orchestrating fake abductions and issuing false reports are criminal offences under Kenyan law. “These criminal acts undermine the integrity of our law enforcement efforts, damage the reputation of the National Police Service, and cause anxiety to the public,” the police statement added.
During Thursday’s court appearance, Kinyagia was accompanied by his lawyer, Wahome Thuku, who told the court that the blogger had gone into hiding out of fear for his life after learning that DCI officers were allegedly pursuing him. Thuku explained that Kinyagia contacted a family member on Tuesday evening from an undisclosed location and expressed willingness to face the law.
“Ndiang’ui has indicated that he is ready and willing to present himself to the DCI and to be presented before any court of law when his safety and security are guaranteed. We have therefore advised him to present himself before the High Court at Milimani Law Courts today,” Thuku said.
The latest developments come amid increased scrutiny of how law enforcement agencies handle cases involving outspoken critics and online activists. As Kinyagia prepares to face investigators, the public remains divided over whether his disappearance was staged or if deeper forces were at play.
