Benni McCarthy Unveils New Harambee Stars Squad for Crucial 2026 World Cup Qualifiers
Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has named a formidable 23-man squad as Kenya prepares for two high-stakes 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Gambia and Gabon.
The national team will first take on Gambia on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at Stade Alassane Ouattara in Ivory Coast. They will then return home for a decisive clash against Gabon at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, March 23, 2025, with kickoff set for 4 PM.
McCarthy’s Vision for the Squad
McCarthy, who is overseeing his first World Cup qualifiers with Kenya, expressed confidence in his selection.
“I’m honored to lead this team in such crucial matches. We have an exciting mix of talent and experience, and I believe we are ready to fight for positive results. The journey to the World Cup is tough, but we will give it everything we have,” he stated.
Squad Analysis: Fresh Faces & Key Returns
McCarthy’s squad includes some fresh call-ups and key returns. Notably, U20 defender Manzur Okwaro earns his first senior team selection, signaling a new era for young talent in Kenyan football. Midfielder Ismael Gonzalez makes a comeback after an extended absence, while dependable players like Eric Johana Omondi, Daniel Anyembe, and Richard Odada add strength to the team.
Kenya’s Position in the Group
Kenya currently holds fourth place in their qualification group with five points, following a win over Seychelles and hard-fought draws against Ivory Coast and Burundi. Group leaders Ivory Coast lead with 10 points, making these next fixtures crucial for Kenya’s qualification hopes.
The format of the qualifiers means that only the group winners will secure direct entry to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, the four best runners-up will enter a CAF Play-Off tournament, where one team will advance to an intercontinental playoff for a final chance at qualification.
