Babu Owino Hints at Running for President in 2027 Amid Rifts in ODM
Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino has ignited fresh debate in Kenya’s political arena after hinting at a potential presidential bid in the 2027 general elections. Speaking to the media on Saturday, April 19, Owino stated that he is more than qualified to take on President William Ruto and win.
“As of now, we are overqualified to beat the President of the Republic of Kenya. It is only Babu Owino who can beat Ruto squarely a day before the elections. Leave alone what people say about winning early in the morning,” he declared.
The vocal MP, known for his bold rhetoric and active engagement with youth, also noted his capability to hold various political positions, including Nairobi governor. However, he emphasized that public service—not titles—should be the key focus of any leadership role.
“We are also overqualified to be the governor of Nairobi and also to be a Member of Parliament. The most important thing is service to the people. It is not just the electoral process; it is what you do after being elected,” he said.
Owino cited his personal experiences and deep connection with the common mwananchi as his most valuable qualification. He believes these experiences uniquely position him to address the country’s socioeconomic challenges.
“The kind of leadership I want for myself in whichever position I vie for in 2027 shall be guided by the Almighty God. I shall work for the people,” he added.
The MP also issued a rallying call to Gen Zs and millennials, urging them to not only vote in the upcoming elections but also actively seek elective positions.
“I want to encourage this generation—the Gen Zs and millennials—to participate in the forthcoming elections in 2027 because they are the majority. They add up to approximately 65 to 70 percent of the Kenyan population,” Owino emphasized.
“Everybody in the country, anybody who goes to cast a ballot, is a politician. That is a political process they are engaging in, which means they are all politicians,” he continued.
Owino warned against politicians who become “dealers” instead of true leaders, accusing them of driving Kenya backward. He said the youth must take control of the political narrative to secure a better future.
With ongoing murmurs of division within the ODM party, Owino’s statement has added a new layer of intrigue as the country prepares for what is expected to be a highly competitive 2027 election.
