Babu Owino Claims Government Withdrew His Security Over Protest Support
Embakasi East MP Paul Ongili, popularly known as Babu Owino, has alleged that the government has withdrawn his official security detail in retaliation for his support of Wednesday’s nationwide protests.
The demonstrations marked the anniversary of the June 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests and saw thousands of Kenyans, especially youth, take to the streets demanding accountability and reforms.
“Yesterday, I stood with the people, not against the nation, but for its future,” Babu posted on X. “Today, in retaliation, the government has withdrawn my official security.”
The MP termed the move as a threat to democracy and an attempt to intimidate leaders who stand with the public.
“I do not fear intimidation. I will not be silenced. Kenyans are my security,” he stated, vowing to continue amplifying calls for justice and accountability.
Owino, a lawyer and vocal supporter of the Gen Z protest movement, reiterated that his participation in the protests was peaceful and constitutionally protected.
He also claimed that other leaders who have criticized the government are experiencing similar treatment, with their state-provided security withdrawn.
“To the public: stay alert, stay united… the truth cannot be suppressed. The movement for justice cannot be stopped,” he urged.
The MP has consistently called out police brutality and government excesses, positioning himself as a leading voice for youth and civil rights advocacy in the country.
The government has yet to issue an official response regarding the alleged security withdrawals.
