Babu Owino Breaks Ranks with Raila, Endorses Kalonzo for 2027 Presidency
Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has seemingly distanced himself from Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga, announcing his support for Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s 2027 presidential bid.
Babu Owino Declares Support for Kalonzo
Speaking on Wednesday, February 26, Babu Owino emphasized that Kalonzo Musyoka had stood by Raila Odinga in the 2013, 2017, and 2022 General Elections and should not be abandoned. He compared Kalonzo’s resilience to that of Kenya’s first president, Jomo Kenyatta, pointing out that Kenyatta did not initially expect to lead but eventually did. He further drew parallels to Daniel Moi and Uhuru Kenyatta, arguing that Kalonzo also has the potential to ascend to the presidency.
“Personally, I know your heart. We went with you to a war that you were not going to get anything. You were not given any position. You stuck with Azimio in 2013, 2017, and 2022. Huyu ni mwanaume, wenye tunaeza betray kweli? Lazima tuwe na utu,” Babu asserted.
A Message to President Ruto
The outspoken MP also took a swipe at President William Ruto, stating that if Ruto truly values Raila Odinga, he should allow him to become president in 2027. Otherwise, Babu Owino declared, he wants no association with the head of state.
Call for Public Support
Babu Owino urged his constituents and Kenyans at large to rally behind Kalonzo Musyoka, asserting that his leadership would bring the necessary transformation the country needs. He maintained that his stance is based on principle, not political expediency.
“I only say things as they are. If it makes you happy, it is okay, and if it doesn’t, it is still okay. After all, I am the best Member of Parliament in this country,” Babu boldly stated.
Political Realignment Ahead of 2027
Babu Owino’s endorsement of Kalonzo Musyoka marks a significant shift in Kenya’s political landscape. With the 2027 General Elections still a few years away, political realignments are already shaping the race, and this move could influence the positioning of key players in the opposition.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how Raila Odinga and other Azimio la Umoja leaders will respond to Babu Owino’s latest declaration.
