Autopsy Confirms Multimedia University Student Sylvia Kemunto Was Strangled to Death
A post-mortem conducted on the body of Multimedia University student Sylvia Kemunto has revealed that she died from strangulation. The autopsy, carried out by Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor, confirmed that the first-year student struggled with her attacker in a desperate attempt to defend herself.
“We saw injuries on the neck, which are typical of people who have been strangled. This indicates that the victim was deprived of oxygen at the time of death. Based on these findings, we concluded that the cause of Sylvia’s death was strangulation,” stated Dr. Oduor.
The gruesome murder has shocked the nation and ignited conversations about gender-based violence and campus safety. The prime suspect, Eric Mutinda, also a first-year student at Multimedia University, has confessed to the crime and provided investigators with a chilling account of the events that led to Sylvia’s death.
According to police reports, the incident occurred after a visit to his sister, Miriam Waweru, in Kasarani. Eric stayed with her until Sunday, when they planned a hiking trip to Ololua. He then met a woman at Kencom before heading to Multimedia University, arriving on campus around noon. He interacted with his two roommates and borrowed a chest bag for the planned hike.
Eric later visited Sylvia, under the pretense of collecting the chest bag. Sylvia was reportedly washing clothes at the time. He allegedly attempted to reconcile their strained relationship, but Sylvia rejected his advances, leading to an argument that escalated into violence. Eric reportedly pushed Sylvia onto the bed and strangled her using a rope from a hoodie.
After the murder, Eric shockingly placed Sylvia’s body into a suitcase and transported it to his dorm room. He covered the suitcase with a blanket and left for a walk, returning about 40 minutes later and continuing with his day as if nothing had happened. That night, he slept in the same room with Sylvia’s body still concealed in the suitcase.
In the early hours of the 31st, Eric reportedly moved Sylvia’s body to a tank. He then removed her SIM card and discarded it within the university compound, but kept the phone. In a disturbing twist, he later visited “Jesus is Alive Ministry” church and offered Sylvia’s phone as a church donation. The device has since been recovered by detectives.
Eric eventually traveled home, where he confessed the murder to his family after watching news coverage of the case on Citizen TV. His parents accompanied him to Sultan Hamud Police Station, where he surrendered to authorities.
He is currently being held at Capital Hill Police Station as investigations continue.
The murder of Sylvia Kemunto has raised serious concerns over mental health support in universities and the prevalence of toxic relationships among young people. Authorities are calling for justice as the case unfolds.
