Alexander Darchiev Appointed as Russia’s Ambassador to the United States
Russian President Vladimir Putin has officially appointed Alexander Nikitich Darchiev as the new ambassador to the United States. The decree, which was published on Russia’s official portal of legal information, also names Darchiev as Russia’s permanent observer at the Organization of American States in Washington.
The appointment follows diplomatic negotiations between Russia and the United States, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirming that an agreement to expedite the appointment of ambassadors was reached during Russia-US talks in Saudi Arabia on February 18, 2025. Washington subsequently approved Darchiev’s appointment during a meeting in Istanbul on February 27, marking a step toward restoring diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Darchiev, who previously served as director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s North Atlantic Department, succeeds Anatoly Antonov, whose tenure as Russia’s envoy to Washington ended in October 2024. His appointment is seen as a crucial move in ongoing efforts to normalize diplomatic engagements between Moscow and Washington amid strained relations.
A Seasoned Diplomat
At 64 years old, Darchiev is a seasoned diplomat with extensive experience in US-Russia relations. A graduate of Moscow State University with a Ph.D. in history, he has been in diplomatic service since 1992. Fluent in English and French, Darchiev has spent a total of ten years working at the Russian Embassy in Washington, with previous stints from 1997 to 2002 and from 2005 to 2010.
His expertise in US affairs has been acknowledged by senior Russian officials, including Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov, who described Darchiev as a highly qualified specialist in American diplomatic matters. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov have also commended his experience and professionalism.
A New Chapter in Russia-US Relations
Darchiev’s appointment comes at a pivotal time in Russia-US relations. His primary role will be to facilitate smoother diplomatic interactions and work towards easing tensions between the two global powers. While significant challenges remain, Moscow has emphasized that restoring diplomatic normalcy remains a top priority.
As he assumes his new position, the international community will be watching closely to see how Darchiev navigates the complex landscape of US-Russia diplomacy in the months ahead.
