Airtel Africa Partners with SpaceX to Bring Starlink Internet to Kenya and Beyond
In a major boost for digital inclusion across the continent, Airtel Africa has partnered with SpaceX to roll out Starlink’s high-speed satellite internet in Kenya and other African countries.
The partnership, announced on May 6, 2025, aims to provide fast and reliable internet access to underserved communities, schools, healthcare facilities, and businesses in remote areas. By leveraging SpaceX’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology, Airtel plans to overcome traditional connectivity barriers that have left millions offline.
Starlink has already secured operating licenses in nine African markets, including Kenya, Nigeria, Zambia, Malawi, and Rwanda. Licensing is underway in Tanzania, Uganda, Gabon, and several other countries.
According to Airtel Africa CEO Sunil Taldar, this collaboration represents a critical step toward bridging the digital divide on the continent. “By joining forces with SpaceX, we’re not just delivering internet—we’re creating opportunities for millions who have long been left behind by conventional service providers,” he said.
The integration of Starlink’s satellite technology will also help Airtel extend its mobile network coverage into areas where it was previously difficult or impossible to deploy infrastructure. This includes many rural and hard-to-reach regions across Kenya.
Chad Gibbs, Vice President of Starlink Business Operations, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration: “We’re excited to work with Airtel to bring Starlink’s transformative internet service to underserved areas of Africa.”
Improved internet access is expected to enable critical services such as e-learning, mobile banking, e-commerce, and telemedicine. These services are especially important as countries like Kenya advance toward goals like universal healthcare and inclusive economic growth.
Though specific pricing and service packages have yet to be announced, the partnership is already being welcomed by many in rural Kenya who have struggled with poor or nonexistent internet connectivity.
Airtel’s reputation for affordable data services and Starlink’s innovative technology signal a promising future for connectivity across Africa—a future in which more people can fully participate in the digital economy.
