Zuchu Becomes First East African Female Artist to Hit 5 Million YouTube Subscribers
Tanzanian singer Zuchu has reached five million YouTube subscribers, becoming the first female artist from East Africa to achieve the milestone, according to a report by K24 Digital.
Tanzanian singer Zuchu has reached another milestone in her music career after her YouTube channel crossed five million subscribers, marking a significant achievement for female artists in East Africa.
The development was highlighted in a post shared on her Instagram page on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. The post celebrated her growing audience and thanked fans for their continued support.
Describing the achievement as “HISTORY IN THE MAKING!”, the post recognised the singer’s talent and consistency while acknowledging the contribution of her supporters.
The milestone adds to Zuchu’s growing digital presence, built through music videos, collaborations and releases that have attracted audiences across the region.
How Zuchu rose to prominence
Born Zuhura Othman Soud, Zuchu hails from Zanzibar, Tanzania, and comes from a family with deep musical roots. Her mother, Khadija Kopa, is a well-known taarab singer whose influence exposed her to music from an early age.
Before establishing herself in Tanzania’s music industry, Zuchu participated in the TECNO Own the Stage singing competition in Lagos, Nigeria, in 2015.
Her breakthrough came in April 2020 when she was introduced as an artist under WCB Wasafi, the record label founded by Diamond Platnumz.
She subsequently released her debut extended play, I Am Zuchu, which helped introduce her musical style to a wider audience.
Her growth on YouTube was evident early in her career. In 2020, she reached 100,000 subscribers within a week of her official introduction, earning a Silver Creator Award. She later became the first female artist from East Africa to reach one million subscribers on the platform.
The music behind her success
Zuchu’s sound combines Bongo Flava and Afropop with influences from taarab, drawing on Tanzanian musical traditions while appealing to younger listeners.
Her 2021 hit Sukari helped expand her popularity beyond Tanzania, with its Swahili lyrics, catchy melody and widely viewed music video contributing to its appeal.
Other releases in her catalogue include Nyumba Ndogo, Wana, Cheche, featuring Diamond Platnumz, and Utaniua.
Her songs frequently explore love, relationships, heartbreak and attraction, themes that have helped her connect with listeners across East Africa.
Collaborations with artists including Diamond Platnumz and Nigerian singer Joeboy have also exposed her music to audiences beyond her home market.
What the milestone means for East African music
Zuchu’s achievement highlights the growing role of digital platforms in the careers of African musicians.
YouTube allows artists to distribute music videos and reach international audiences without relying exclusively on traditional channels such as radio and television.
For musicians from East Africa, building a substantial online following can help increase the visibility of their music across national borders and create opportunities to reach new listeners.
Zuchu has also received recognition through African music award nominations and honours at the Tanzania Music Awards, adding to her profile in the regional entertainment industry.
Her five-million-subscriber milestone represents another major step in a career that has grown rapidly since her introduction to the music industry in 2020.
