Maina Kageni Questions Ne-Yo’s Short Nairobi Concert Despite KSh 40,000 Tickets
Classic 105 presenter Maina Kageni questioned the length of Ne-Yo’s Mashujaa Day performance in Nairobi, raising questions about concertgoers’ expectations after paying premium ticket prices. Co-host King’ang’i contrasted the American singer’s set with local artistes known for performing late into the night.
Maina Kageni questions Ne-Yo’s Nairobi concert duration
Classic 105 breakfast show presenter Maina Kageni has questioned whether Ne-Yo’s relatively short performance at his Nairobi concert met the expectations of fans who paid thousands of shillings to attend.
The American R&B star headlined the sold-out One Night Only: Brunch Edition at Ulinzi Sports Complex on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, during Mashujaa Day celebrations.
The concert marked Ne-Yo’s first headline performance in Kenya in 11 years, with ticket prices ranging from KSh 15,000 for Gold access to KSh 40,000 for Platinum.
Discussing the event on Classic 105, Maina pointed to the large turnout in the premium section while challenging claims that Kenyans were struggling financially.
“People have money, especially the KSh 40,000 segment; it was very full. So I hear you guys say that there is no money in Kenya. Be specific; it is you who doesn’t have money,” he said on air.
King’ang’i compares Ne-Yo with Kenyan musicians
The conversation turned to the length of Ne-Yo’s performance after co-host King’ang’i said the singer had taken the stage at around 7 pm, while the sun was still setting.
Maina confirmed that the performance had ended by approximately 9 pm, prompting a joke about the concert finishing before the evening news bulletin had begun.
King’ang’i contrasted the international star’s schedule with that of Kenyan musicians Ken Wa Maria and Kativui, who are known for entertaining audiences late into the night.
“Do you know that Ken Wa Maria is usually told that by midnight, it is still early for him to leave? Kativui similarly performs as late as 3 am, and at that time, people are still arriving at the event because it is a party till dawn. Do you know what that means? That is until the sun comes up,” he said.
The comparison highlighted differing expectations around live performances, particularly between international concerts and local events where entertainment can continue until the early morning.
However, Maina cautioned against expecting Ne-Yo to follow the same performance schedule as local musicians.
“If Ne-Yo were to do what Mwalimu is saying, they would stone him. He only does one and a half hours, and he is done,” he said.
Which songs did Ne-Yo perform in Nairobi?
Despite the discussion about the concert’s duration, Ne-Yo performed several of his best-known songs during the show.
His set included So Sick, Miss Independent and Closer. He also performed Rihanna’s Take a Bow, which he co-wrote.
UK showband Sol & The Gang opened the event, while local DJs entertained attendees throughout the day.
The concert also featured a strict “Ne-Yo Luxe” fashion theme, with guests dressing up for the occasion.
The discussion by the Classic 105 presenters raises a question for concert organisers and audiences alike: how should the value of a live show be measured when ticket prices are high? While some fans may prioritise the duration of a performance, others may place greater importance on the artiste, production and experience.
Whether attendees considered Ne-Yo’s set worth the ticket price, however, cannot be established from the presenters’ discussion alone.
