Passenger Dies Suddenly on Kenya Airways Flight Minutes Before Landing in Lagos
A passenger has died after becoming unresponsive during a Kenya Airways flight from Nairobi to Lagos, with the airline confirming that its crew carried out emergency procedures before the aircraft landed in Nigeria.
The medical emergency occurred on Tuesday, October 6, at about 9.20pm Nigerian time, approximately 20 minutes before the flight was scheduled to arrive at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
According to an incident update issued by Kenya Airways on Wednesday, the passenger became unresponsive while on board.
The cabin crew responded by administering first aid and following the airline’s established emergency procedures as the aircraft continued towards Lagos.
The flight subsequently landed at Murtala Muhammed International Airport at approximately 9.41pm.
Medical personnel met the aircraft after landing and examined the passenger before confirming the death.
Kenya Airways has not publicly identified the passenger and has not disclosed the cause of death.
The circumstances surrounding the medical emergency were not immediately clear, and there was no indication from the airline that the incident affected the aircraft’s ability to complete its journey safely.
In its statement, Kenya Airways said it was working with the passenger’s family as well as relevant local authorities and aviation regulators following the incident.
The airline also expressed its condolences to the passenger’s family and friends.
The incident comes as airlines continue to emphasise the importance of cabin-crew training and emergency procedures when passengers experience serious medical problems during flights. Although aircraft crews are trained to respond to in-flight medical emergencies, the ability to provide treatment can be limited by the circumstances and resources available in the cabin.
Kenya Airways has not provided further details about the passenger’s medical condition or whether any additional medical assistance was requested while the aircraft was in flight.
Further information may emerge as authorities and the airline continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.
