NEA issues urgent warning to Kenyans over scammers posing as officials in fake job calls

The National Employment Authority (NEA) has issued a fresh warning to Kenyan jobseekers after scammers were reportedly found using a phone number to impersonate officials from the government agency.

The authority said members of the public should be cautious when receiving unsolicited calls or messages from individuals claiming to represent NEA, particularly when the contact involves job opportunities or requests for personal information.

In a warning issued on Wednesday, September 30, NEA identified the number 0747****26 as being used by individuals allegedly posing as its officials.

“Caution: Scammers are using this number (0747****26) while posing as National Employment Authority (NEA) officials,” the authority said.

NEA stressed that the number has no official connection to the authority and should not be regarded as an authorised communication channel.

“This number is not an official NEA line and is not associated with us. Report any contact from it immediately,” the authority said in a statement shared with Kenyans.co.ke.

Jobseekers urged to verify recruitment agencies

The latest warning comes amid continued concerns over fraudulent recruitment schemes targeting Kenyans searching for employment.

NEA has previously urged jobseekers to conduct checks on recruitment agencies before accepting employment offers, particularly when opportunities involve travelling abroad.

The authority advised applicants to establish whether a recruitment agency is officially recognised by the government and registered with NEA.

Jobseekers can also check recruitment companies through the National Employment Authority Integrated Management System (NEAIMS) portal and confirm that the agency’s registration and operating licence remain valid.

The checks are intended to help applicants distinguish legitimate recruitment opportunities from fraudulent schemes before committing money or personal information.

Wider warnings over fake jobs and migration offers

The NEA warning comes against a wider backdrop of alerts concerning fraudulent employment and migration opportunities targeting Kenyans.

The Australian High Commission in Kenya has also warned about fake employment and visa-related advertisements falsely claiming links to its officers.

Such schemes can target people hoping to secure employment overseas, making verification particularly important before applicants provide documents, pay fees or make other commitments.

Fake recruitment offers have also been associated with opportunities presented as being connected to public institutions and government programmes.

For jobseekers, NEA’s latest warning reinforces the need to verify the identity of anyone claiming to represent the authority and to check recruitment agencies through official government channels.

NEA lists its official contact as 020 8610000 and info@nea.go.ke.
