Apple Developing First-Ever Low-Cost MacBook, Launch Expected in 2026
Apple is reportedly developing its first low-cost MacBook, marking a major shift in strategy as the tech giant seeks to compete directly with Chromebooks and budget Windows laptops in the education and entry-level market.
According to Bloomberg and Reuters, the upcoming device — internally codenamed “J700” — could launch as early as the first half of 2026.
Unlike Apple’s current MacBook Air and Pro models, which start at around US$1,000 (Sh130,000), the new budget-friendly MacBook is expected to retail for under US$800 (Sh104,000).
Apple Targets Education and Budget Market
Industry insiders reveal that the new model will likely be powered by an A-series chip — the same processor family used in iPhones and iPads — instead of Apple’s high-end M-series chips.
This move is expected to lower production costs while offering solid performance for everyday computing needs such as web browsing, document editing, and video calls.
Design-wise, the laptop will feature a simplified aluminium chassis, a standard LCD screen, and fewer ports — intentional cost-cutting measures that maintain Apple’s signature quality while making the product more affordable.
“The goal is to deliver a Mac that feels like a Mac — but without the premium price tag,”
— Industry analyst commenting on the project.
Competing with Chromebooks
Over the past decade, Chromebooks have become dominant in the education sector, holding nearly 30% of global sales according to IDC data.
Apple has long struggled to gain traction in this space due to its premium pricing and hardware costs.
By venturing into the budget segment, Apple appears to be taking a page from its iPhone SE strategy — offering a scaled-down device that maintains the Apple ecosystem experience at a lower price point.
If successful, the J700 model could redefine Apple’s positioning in the laptop market, expanding its reach beyond professionals and creatives to students and budget-conscious consumers worldwide.
