Chianda High School Fire: 113 Students Displaced After Dormitory Burns Down
A second fire in less than a month has struck Chianda High School, destroying a dormitory and leaving 113 students without their personal belongings as authorities investigate the cause of the latest blaze.
The fire broke out on Friday, July 11, 2026, reducing the Senior Chief Nathan Ojungo House dormitory to ashes. No injuries or deaths were reported following the incident.
The affected students lost bedding, clothing, books and other personal items after the fire swept through the dormitory.
“Only Senior Chief Nathan Ojungo House was destroyed by fire yesterday. Ojungo Houses Form three students. Silver, Orange, and another stream spend here. The approximate cost for the renovation will be communicated,” the school confirmed the incident on Saturday, July 11, 2026.
Students Lose Belongings as Fire Destroys Dormitory
The blaze completely destroyed the dormitory occupied by the 113 students, forcing them to seek alternative accommodation within the school compound.
School officials and emergency responders moved quickly to evacuate students from the affected area and contained the fire before it could spread to neighbouring buildings.
Authorities confirmed that all students were accounted for and that there were no casualties.
The school is now assessing the damage and determining the immediate support required for learners affected by the disaster.
Second Fire at Chianda High School Within a Month
The latest incident has heightened concerns after another dormitory fire was reported at Chianda High School only weeks earlier.
The repeated fires have raised questions about fire prevention measures in schools and whether additional safety measures are needed to protect students and learning facilities.
Officials are investigating whether the two incidents are connected, although no conclusions have been made.
The development comes amid continued concerns over school fires in Kenya, with education stakeholders calling for stronger safety systems in boarding institutions.
Investigations Launched Into Cause of Fire
Security agencies have begun investigations to establish what caused the latest dormitory blaze.
Education officials are also assessing the extent of destruction and reviewing the needs of students who lost their belongings.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation and allow investigators to complete their work before the cause of the fire is confirmed.
The findings are expected to help determine whether the incident was caused by an electrical fault, an accident or other circumstances.
Growing Calls for Improved School Fire Safety
The Chianda High School fire has renewed discussions on the importance of stronger safety measures in learning institutions.
Experts have repeatedly emphasised the need for regular fire inspections, functional emergency response systems, proper evacuation plans and student awareness programmes.
As investigations continue, attention remains focused on restoring normal learning conditions for affected students while ensuring similar incidents are prevented in the future.
