Gachagua: I’ll Seek Uhuru Kenyatta’s Advice Before Making My Next Political Move

Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has said former President Uhuru Kenyatta will play a key role in shaping his next political move as he prepares for the 2027 General Election.

Speaking on Saturday, July 11, while hosting a delegation from Oljororok in Nyandarua County at his Wamunyoro home, Gachagua said the views he has collected during his ongoing 45-day consultation tour will be presented to the former Head of State once the exercise concludes.

The former deputy president described his relationship with Uhuru as strong and unwavering, dismissing claims that the two leaders are politically estranged.

“Uhuru Kenyatta and I are working together. My elder brother (Uhuru) and I are good friends..When I finish all these consultations, after getting all your views, I will go sit down with him so that we compare notes for him to advise me.”

Gachagua said the consultations are also intended to correct what he considers a major political mistake made by Mt Kenya leaders during the 2022 General Election.

According to him, leaders from the region failed to heed Uhuru’s guidance at the time, a decision he now believes should not be repeated.

“I will tell him what Mt Kenya people are saying, because he advised us in 2022 but we didn’t listen,” he said. “I will tell him that this time I have heard what the people have said and would want to get his advice as our leader.”

His remarks add fresh weight to speculation that the former deputy president and Uhuru could be working towards a broader political understanding ahead of the next election.

Gachagua also rejected suggestions that his relationship with the former president has deteriorated, saying political opponents are deliberately trying to create divisions within the Mt Kenya region.

He accused rivals of attempting to weaken the region’s political influence by portraying him and Uhuru as being at odds.

“No one will divide us again,” he said. “I see them insulting Uhuru because they know we are together.”

The comments also appeared to target allies of President William Ruto, some of whom have previously urged Uhuru to stay out of active politics and maintain the neutrality expected of a former Head of State.

Gachagua’s Wamunyoro consultations began on June 16 and are expected to continue until July 31. During the retreat, he has hosted delegations from across the Mt Kenya region as part of what he describes as a consensus-building process aimed at identifying a single opposition candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

The meetings have continued to fuel speculation over the future of opposition politics and the possibility of closer cooperation between Gachagua and Uhuru as political alignments begin to take shape ahead of the next electoral contest.
