Scores Missing After 3 Boats Capsize in Kilifi and Lamu Following Kenya Met Department Warning
At least three boats capsized off the coast of Kilifi and Lamu counties on Saturday, May 24, just days after the Kenya Meteorological Department issued warnings of dangerous sea conditions.
According to a statement by the Kenya Red Cross, the incidents occurred early Saturday morning at Vidazini and Mnarani in Kilifi County, and Mutuni in Lamu County. Several people have been rescued, though dozens are still unaccounted for as search and rescue efforts continue.
“Three boat capsize incidents were reported this morning… Several people have been rescued, with search efforts ongoing despite rough sea conditions,” the Red Cross said.
Coast Guard, KMA Join Rescue Efforts
Emergency response teams—including the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA), the Coast Guard Service, Beach Management Units (BMUs), and county lifeguards—were quickly deployed to assist in rescue operations.
Efforts have been complicated by high waves and strong southerly winds, the very conditions that led authorities to issue prior warnings.
“Our teams are on the ground supporting offshore response, medical evaluation, and lifeguard services,” added the Kenya Red Cross.
Beaches Closed, Fishing Suspended
The capsizing comes just a day after Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sherrif Nassir ordered a two-day closure of all beaches and ocean-based activities in the region. The directive, issued on May 23, followed advisories from the Kenya Meteorological Department forecasting hazardous marine conditions.
Governor Nassir also temporarily halted ongoing construction activities near coastal zones, citing risks posed by wind-related hazards. Fishermen and water sports operators were instructed to suspend operations until further notice.
Risk Remains High Along Kenya’s Coastline
The Kenya Meteorological Department had earlier warned of strong southerly winds and large waves along the coastline, urging maritime operators to exercise extreme caution.
With the Indian Ocean now rough and unpredictable, authorities continue to monitor the situation. Daily situation updates have been promised by county governments to keep residents and stakeholders informed.
