Motorists Stuck for Hours as Protesters Block Kasarani-Mwiki Road
Chaos erupted along the busy Kasarani-Mwiki road on Tuesday morning as residents took to the streets in protest over the killing of a local resident, paralyzing traffic for hours and forcing motorists to seek alternative routes.
The incident unfolded near St. Francis Hospital, where demonstrators blocked the road using stones, decrying the fatal stabbing of a resident by suspected gang members on Monday morning. The protest brought movement to a halt in the Stima area, as angered locals demanded swift justice for the slain victim.
Motorists were caught in the gridlock, with some stranded for hours and others diverting through feeder roads in the estates to escape the snarl-up. Images from the scene showed cabs and Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) attempting to maneuver through makeshift paths amid the chaos.
Police officers arrived at the scene in an attempt to disperse the protesters and restore order. Although the exact circumstances of the stabbing remain unclear, the growing insecurity in the area has sparked outrage among residents.
The authorities have advised motorists to avoid the route and use alternative roads while the situation is being addressed.
This protest mirrors a similar incident that took place days earlier along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, where demonstrators blocked the Kiboko area using large stones and burning tyres following the lynching of a middle-aged man. In that case, a local businessman—also a teacher—allegedly attacked the man on accusations of theft. He remains at large.
In both cases, the demand for justice and public safety has taken center stage, with residents calling on law enforcement to act swiftly against perpetrators and ensure the safety of all.
