Kapsowar Girls Students Stage Peaceful Walkout, Demand Principal’s Removal

Learning was temporarily disrupted at Moi Girls’ High School, Kapsowar, on Monday after hundreds of students staged a peaceful walkout, demanding the removal of their school principal.

Dressed in full school uniform, the students marched out of the institution and into Kapsowar town, chanting slogans that reflected deep-seated frustrations with the school’s leadership.

In videos and images circulating on social media, the students can be heard shouting phrases such as “Our principal is hard-headed.” Despite the emotionally charged protest, the students maintained calm throughout the walk, with no cases of vandalism reported either within or outside the school compound.

While the exact reasons for the students’ dissatisfaction remain unclear, the protest has drawn attention due to the school’s previously strong academic standing and reputation for discipline. Moi Girls’ High School, Kapsowar, posted an impressive mean grade of 7.73 (B-) in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), placing it among the country’s top 200 schools.

The incident adds to a growing list of school-based protests across the country in recent months.

On May 12, learning was brought to a standstill at St. Teresa’s Bikeke Boys High School in Trans Nzoia County, after students went on strike to demand the removal of their newly posted principal, accusing him of intimidation and poor leadership.

Similarly, on March 26, a group of concerned parents—led by Malindi MP Amina Mnyazi—stormed Kakuyuni Boys Secondary School in Malindi. They accused the school’s principal of mismanagement and blamed him for the school’s poor performance in recent national examinations.

As education stakeholders continue to monitor developments at Kapsowar Girls, calls for investigations and dialogue are expected to determine the root cause of student unrest and restore normalcy to the institution.
