State Plans to Arrest Governor Natembeya on Monday, Kalonzo Reveals
Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has alleged a government plot to arrest Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya on Monday, May 19, in what he describes as a politically motivated move meant to intimidate and tarnish the governor’s name.
Speaking during a rally in Machakos on Sunday, Kalonzo claimed that the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) had already secured a search warrant targeting the governor’s properties, with plans to detain him briefly before releasing him.
“Governor Natembeya is threatened as we speak. They have obtained a search warrant to search his house. This is simply a plot to embarrass him before the people of Trans Nzoia,” Kalonzo said.
He warned that the EACC should not be weaponized for political purposes and criticized the alleged use of state machinery to silence dissenting voices within county governments.
The Wiper leader also mentioned that Democratic Action Party-Kenya (DAP-K) boss Eugene Wamalwa is ready to intervene in an attempt to block the governor’s arrest.
Governor Natembeya, who recently clashed with security officers during a county tour, has been under increasing political pressure in recent months. Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei previously called for his impeachment, accusing him of tribalism, poor leadership, and corruption.
“Governor Natembeya should be impeached for stoking tribal animosity, division, poor development, and graft allegations. These are impeachable offences under the Constitution,” Senator Cherargei argued.
In response, Natembeya dismissed the senator’s claims, urging him to focus on his own county.
“I don’t understand why a senator from Nandi is interfering with Trans Nzoia’s affairs. Let him mind his own business,” Natembeya said.
Kalonzo also condemned the recent arrest of Mumias East MP Peter Salasya, terming it as another act of state repression. Salasya was reportedly apprehended by DCI officers on the Isiolo-Nanyuki road after addressing a rally on Friday, May 16. He is allegedly being held at the Nairobi Central Police Station without formal charges.
“They’ve arrested Peter Salasya simply for expressing his views. He’s being held without any credible charges. This is a clear violation of his freedom of expression,” Kalonzo said.
The developments have sparked concern among opposition leaders, who warn of a broader crackdown on vocal politicians perceived to be critical of the government.
