The presidential election petition at the Supreme Court has continued to take a new twist as each party files their submissions. In the latest revelation by the IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati’s submissions, the chair revealed that prior to his announcement of William Ruto as president-elect, he received in usual visitors at the National Tallying Center who sought to have an urgent meeting with him.
According to tye affidavit filed by Chebukati’s lawyers, the unusual visitors were from the military, and top police officers. This was after receiving a call from Joseph Kinyua, a top officer in president Uhuru’s government who told him that he was expected to receive officers from the assumption committee to discuss matters related to handing over.
Wafula however revealed that the members from the National Security Council were however of a different opinion that he should do everything to ensure that Raila Odinga wins the election. In a plan B, Chebukati was also directed to ensure that if he doesn’t declare Raila Odinga as president, then he should ensure that there is a runoff.
Chebukati went ahead to claim that prior to that, he had also received Azimio leaders as early as 3am. Led by former AG Amos Wako and Raphael Tuju, the message was still the same as the one that was delivered by NSC. He went ahead to claim that after holding a quick meeting with the leaders, four of the commissioners led by the commission’s vice chair Juliana Cherera agreed to the idea but he and the other two disagreed.
